Through an arduous and rigorous process of constrained writing, artist Pablo Helguera takes on T. S. Eliot’s monumental poem The Waste Land, eliminating letters and words inside the original work to produce a XXIst century reflection on art making today. First conceived as a gallery exhibition and subsequently as an online project, this book offers the full printed version of the work.

“[…] Helguera’s work [allows] the viewer to both see and see through it, whereas the text version omits the parent, forcing us to fly on our own. The latter is the riskier move, moving us into uncharted territories. It’s a success: The ghost of Eliot is ever-present, lending foundational strength and credibility to the conceptual gesture. In the end, Helguera’s actions are at once reifying and radical.”

Kenneth Goldsmith, from the Preface
